Which computers does the desktop app support?

The desktop app supports Apple silicon Macs and Windows 64-bit (x64) computers only. Intel Macs, Windows ARM or 32-bit, and Linux are not supported desktop targets.

See desktop downloads for installer availability.

How do I make my first project?

Start with one idea and one page. Choose Decks, Docs or Design, create a blank project, and add your own words and layout. You can rename it as you work.

In the desktop app, use the workspace tabs or File → New deck, New document or New design. Already in an editor? The app logo takes you back to your workspace.

Which part of the workspace should I use?
  • Decks: presentations, slide by slide.
  • Docs: proposals, reports and longer writing.
  • Design: posters, diagrams and visual layouts.
  • Notes: quick ideas and working notes.
  • Plan: tasks, with Calendar and Boards as alternative views.

Home brings your work together. You can move between these tabs without turning each idea into a separate workflow.

How do I keep my work visually consistent?

Open Brand and set your colours, fonts and logo. Use that kit in decks, documents and designs so your work shares the same visual language.

Picking a new Google font may require a connection the first time it downloads. See how font downloads work.

Where are my files saved?

Your work is saved in Documents/SLATENO, or the workspace folder you selected. Open Help → Reveal workspace folder in the desktop menu to find it. You can also show or move the folder from Account → Preferences → Desktop app.

There is no cloud sync in the current app. Keep a separate backup of important work. Read how your work is stored.

How do I back up my work or move computers?

Export your workspace from Account → Your data to keep a portable .slateno copy. In the desktop app, you can also back up your workspace folder using your usual backup tool.

Keep the original copy until you have opened and checked your work on the new device. Moving the desktop workspace folder through Preferences copies the files first and keeps the old folder.

A project seems to be missing. What should I check?
  1. Return to Home and check the matching workspace tab and any folders.
  2. Check Trash for an item you may have deleted.
  3. On desktop, reveal the workspace folder and confirm you are using the expected folder.
  4. In a browser, make sure you are using the same browser profile and device.

If you have a backup, keep a copy of your current work before restoring. Avoid clearing site data while investigating. If the project is still missing, send feedback with the steps you tried.

Can I work without an internet connection?

Local editing and workspace organisation work offline once the app is available on your device. Accounts, feedback, updates and first-time font downloads need a connection.

Speech services may need a connection too. Files are not automatically copied between devices. Export or back up your work before moving it.

Which formats can I export?

Open Export in your editor and choose from the formats available for that kind of work. Decks support PDF, PNG and web; documents also offer Word. Designs have their own image and document export options.

The slides PDF and PNG exports carry a small “Made with SLATENO” credit; notes pages and handouts don't. The export dialog explains when the credit is included.

On desktop, File → Export opens the same export flow. Keep your editable .slateno source as well as the exported file.

How do I present or check my work?

Use Present for a deck, or Preview for a document or design. Check the layout and text before exporting or sending the file.

In the desktop app, View → Present opens the presentation action. File → Print opens the system print dialog for a supported view; you can review its pages before printing.

How do I send my work to someone?

Export your work and send the file using your usual email or messaging app. Choose a format your recipient can open, such as PDF.

Published share links are not enabled in the current app. Sending an exported file does not give the recipient access to your workspace.

I forgot my password. How can I recover access?

Open the password recovery page to request a single-use link by email. Check your spam folder too. Links expire after 30 minutes.

Resetting your password signs out existing sessions. It does not remove your files.

Something is broken. What should I send you?

Open Feedback & Help and choose Something's broken. Tell us what you were trying to do, what happened instead, and the steps that trigger it.

Include your app version and operating system if you know them. Keep passwords and confidential document content out of your message. If the desktop app reports an unexpected exit after reopening, use its Send feedback action.

Replies appear under My feedback in the same dialog. Feedback requires an account.

Where can I change my privacy settings?

Open Account → Preferences to manage desktop diagnostics, voice and connected agents. For workspace exports and deletion, use Your data.

Our Privacy guide explains what is stored, which features contact other services, and what each control changes.

Can it read to me, or take dictation?

Yes, in English, where your browser or system supports it. In a deck or document, open Settings → Reading; in a note, use Voice.

On Mac, ⌘⇧S starts dictation and ⌘⇧U starts read aloud. Use Ctrl instead of ⌘ on Windows. Esc stops either. Read aloud has pause, skip and speed controls; dictation inserts text at the cursor and supports commands such as “period” and “new paragraph”.

Choose your English variant, voice and speed in Account → Preferences → Voice. Speech may use your browser's or system's online services. See the voice privacy details.

Can I connect an AI agent to my workspace?

In the desktop app, open Account → Preferences → Connect an AI assistant. Open Set up an assistant (MCP), enable the connection, copy the access token and use the configuration provided for your client. The app must stay open while the agent works.

Agents can use the supported tools to read, search, create and edit decks, documents and notes. Use read-only mode to restrict changes, and review calls under Recent activity. You can disable the connection or regenerate its token.

The connection runs locally, but your agent may send content to its own AI provider. It does not provide general access to your computer's files. Follow the MCP setup guide. Read the agent privacy details.

Does the app generate work with AI?

Built-in AI generation and editing are not enabled in the current app. Build your slides, documents and designs by hand with the editor.

An external agent you choose to connect is a separate feature. See the agent question under Voice & tools for setup and privacy details.

Your work is worth keeping. Save a backup before changing devices, clearing browser data or troubleshooting a missing file.
